Tips on Networking, So Essential for Our Success

Networking is a vital tool for professional success, yet it is often dreaded and avoided. These slides emphasize the importance of networking and provide practical steps to make it a positive and rewarding experience. 


My clients will sometimes say they aren't comfortable asking for help. Even though they are very willing to help others. People really do want to help us, it's rewarding and fulfilling for them! 


Networking offers benefits such as:

  • Collaboration

  • Recognition

  • Visibility

  • Opportunities

  • Advancement

  • Relationships

  • Insights


It's essential to approach networking with a genuine desire to help others and find common ground. It is not just about self-promotion but also about creating mutually beneficial connections.


Who do you want/need to be in your network?

  • Relationships to be effective in your work

  • Relationships to help you advance in your career

  • Important stakeholders at various levels


One client shared that he finds a purpose to meet with others and then determines if there is benefit to continue meeting. Instead of seeing networking as a chore, reframe it as an opportunity to learn and help others. Approaching networking with a genuine curiosity and desire to make meaningful connections can make it more enjoyable. 


Find Common Ground: Look for shared interests or experiences that can serve as a starting point. Building connections on a personal level can lead to more authentic and lasting professional relationships.


Be proactive: Don't wait for opportunities to come to you; actively seek them out. Attend industry events, join professional groups, and participate in online communities related to your field to expand your network.


Networking is not just about asking for favors; it's about offering help and support to others. By being generous with your time, knowledge, and resources, you establish yourself as a valuable and trusted connection.


QUESTIONS for Internal Networking:

  • Is there any general advice you would give me to be successful in my role?

  • Could you tell me about your role?

  • What do you find most rewarding in your role/in the company?

  • What are the opportunities in your department?

  • Have you taken any good training that I may find interesting?

  • Are there opportunities for us to collaborate?

  • Is there anyone else in the organization that you think would be good for me to introduce myself to?

  • What might I be able to do for you?


Steps To Take:

  • Make a list of who to network with – other depts, higher levels, project teams, external contacts

  • Research who you’re talking to and have questions ready

  • Determine your networking goals – be clear and concise.

  • Start with people who already interact with your dept, people who may be in a position to help you reach your career goals (alumni or former colleagues externally)

  • Prepare and know your value proposition/elevator pitch

  • Schedule regular check-ins with some people

  • Reciprocity – opportunities to offer value, Share insights, pay it forward

  • Use social media to get known

  • Join professional groups on LinkedIn or Slack groups and communities


After meeting someone, follow up and nurture the relationship. Send personalized messages, share relevant articles or resources, and stay in touch periodically. Networking improves with practice. Don't be discouraged by initial discomfort or fear. The more you engage in networking activities, the more comfortable and effective you will become.


By implementing these strategies, individuals can unlock the power of networking and pave the way for career growth and exciting opportunities.
