Improving Work Relationships

Studies show that poor workplace relationships can be a significant source of stress. As a coach, I sometimes hear about client’s challenging work relationships. Avoiding the problem is not a viable option. If the problem is not too far gone, this approach may help you.


We are all multi-faceted individuals with both good and bad sides. If you choose to focus on the negative aspects of the person, it will be difficult to have a relationship.


What is the secret?

The secret to any relationship is finding at least one thing that you value and respect about the person, and disciplining yourself to focus on only that.


Try this experiment:

Focus on at least one thing you value with a blind eye to what you already know you don't like. See what happens in your interactions, see how you feel about them, and what changes occur in your relationship. Remember, shifting your focus can make a big difference in how you relate to others.
