Here's what you require from your staff and the steps you can take to make a positive change:

  • Be clear about expectations and success criteria.  Clearly communicate what you are looking for.  Share templates and examples to provide guidance and clarity.

  • Setup check-in date when assigning the task – so follow ups don’t feel like nagging.

  • Make sure you get regular status updates and to be advised of any issues or risks in a timely manner.

  • Encourage employees to ask questions and seek clarification.

  • Review drafts ahead of the deadline to allow time for revisions.

  • Expect them to meet deadlines or advise in advance if the date needs to shift.

  • Resist taking over when things aren't moving as quickly as desired.

  • Resist following up.

  • Stay out of the weeds and focus on your strategic work.

  • Let your employees build the muscle of accountability.
